Coming Soon: Acute Rehabilitation
Northwest Specialty Hospital, An Extension of Northern Nevada Medical Center, will be opening in winter 2025. When it opens, our acute rehabilitation team will offer a continuum of care from our hospital to post-acute recovery and a path to independence for all patients. The 28-bed program is designed to rebuild a patient’s strength and endurance, and help them achieve a high level of recovery following a debilitating injury, illness or medical condition. We specialize in:
- Stroke
- Amputations
- Major trauma
- Medical deconditioning and other disabling conditions
- Neurological conditions
- Parkinson’s disease
- Spinal cord injury
Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy Services
The acute rehabilitation team at Northwest Specialty Hospital will offer an extensive rehabilitation program. This will include physical, occupational and speech therapy programs based on the individual needs of the patient. Specialized rehabilitation services in neurological, spinal and orthopedic therapy will also be available.
An in-hospital rehabilitation center offers patients several advantages over skilled nursing facilities or other post-acute rehabilitation settings. There is a seamless transition from the acute care to the therapy setting at Northwest Specialty Hospital.
Your Care Team
Our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team will be led by a rehabilitation physician who works in partnership with nursing, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers/case managers. The program is centered around the patient, and we will work closely with your family/caregiver to help you develop and achieve recovery goals. The patient’s commitment and participation in the program is vital.
A Pathway to Independence
Each patient has an individualized plan of care that focuses on their unique needs. With the support of the rehabilitation team, each patient will be asked to participate in daily therapy programs so they can reach their goals. To encourage success, the rehabilitation team will ask patients to:
- Participate fully in therapy. Be ready for each activity based on a daily schedule.
- Get active by getting out of bed, getting dressed and sitting in a chair for meals. The more active you are, the stronger you will become.
- Communicate with the team, especially about your recovery goals and a discharge plan.
- Be proactive about pain, which can hinder progress. Talk to the staff so they can assist.
- Stay active on weekends to continue to build strength, endurance and stamina.
Family members and caregivers are also critical to the recovery process. The rehab team will provide training in many areas and caregivers are asked to participate in rehabilitation activities. This will help them know how to provide the best assistance and care at home.
In addition to the comprehensive support a patient will receive during their stay at Northwest Specialty Hospital, we encourage all patients to utilize our Transitional Care Apartment prior to discharge. The apartment is designed to simulate a patient’s home experience. We want our patients to be home ready, and by utilizing the Transitional Care Apartment, patients get real-time training and therapy in the home environment.
The Admissions Process
Once you are referred to our hospital, you will receive a no-cost pre-admission screening. In addition to considering your diagnosis, we will look at the following criteria to determine if our acute rehabilitation program is appropriate for you:

- Need at least two types of therapy
- Be able to participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy, five days a week
- Have the potential to improve their functional skill, including the ability to return or move to a supportive living environment
- Be motivated to participate in the program
Preparing for Your Stay
