Northern Nevada Medical Center Achieves National Accreditation for Bariatric Services
Northern Nevada Medical Center (NNMC) was recently recognized by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), for meeting the highest standards for bariatric patient safety and quality.
“Our team is committed to adhering to national best practices for all patients, and accreditation in bariatrics demonstrates our commitment to patients seeking surgical treatment and post-hospital care for bariatrics,” said Helen Lidholm, Chief Executive Officer at Northern Nevada Medical Center.
The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, ensure metabolic and bariatric patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. MBSAQIP-Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.

“This accreditation creates a culture of excellence and accountability for both our patients and staff,” said Kent Sasse, MD, Director of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Northern Nevada Medical Center. “We bring a heightened focus to every department before, during and after surgery to ensure patients have a sense of safety and confidence in their care.”
Accreditation criteria include appropriate staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways to ensure its ability to support patients of this demographic, and an approved site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon. NNMC also needed to provide detailed information and data about the quantity and quality of the bariatric procedures performed at the facility to show their competency as high performing in this area of surgery.
